I really don’t understand your post unless it was sarcasm at a previous poster, or an attempt at comedy.
Perhaps you can elucidate.

post was clearly written, no need to “elucidate”
If it was clear I would not have asked.
Depending on your meaning there are different responses.
If you care to explain I’ll answer accordingly.
Hi,
As far as I can tell:
Latest
As I wrote above, my problem is that this message about “Starter plan” appeared all the sudden, without reason. I didn’t ask for anything to change and, to add to my previous post, I don’t know now if anything changed.
Basically, I feel that I cannot trust Rocket.Chat not to mess with my instance. Unless you’ve got an explanation for this “surprising” dialogue box.
Best,
Yann
No idea when or how you got the message. You have provided no serious debugging info. Just vague statements. So hard to say what, where, when, why.
I’ve not seen it on my Starter boxes since they started this licencing system around 6.5
Rocket haven’t touched your instance. Yup, they may change their terms of use, but that is their prerogative.
Their terms of use for their pre-compiled binaries and back end systems have evolved over time.
You can either accept them by using their binaries, or see my comments above about open “source code”.
You do have choices, though they may not be the one you want. It is what it is.
If you are on a 6.x then Starter is pretty well full featured for up to 25 users.
For 7.x they increased that to 50 users, but added some restrictions to CE. Pretty generous for startups, small SMEs etc.
(That is in the docs & changelogs if you read them)
Ultimately Rocket.Chat want you to use and enjoy the system.
But it isn’t a free lunch. The development has to be paid for somehow, and they’ve tried to get bigger users to help subsidise the smaller (poorer) ones in the hope they’ll grow and potentially become the bigger, richer, customers one day. That’s business.
If not you get no software at all. No one wants that!!
Hi there,
Rocket haven’t touched your instance. Yup, they may change their terms of use, but that is their prerogative.
But then, why has this dialogue just appeared out of the blue? Something must have changed to trigger it, musn’t it?
Best,
Yann
PS. Just to be clear, this is the dialogue that I’m talking about, which I had never seen before.
My concerns come from the second line “This workspace is now on the Rocket.Chat Starter plan.” (emphasis mine). If it is “now” on this plan, then it wasn’t before? And why this sudden change?
Starter plan has been around for 25 users since 6.5
That was updated to 50 users for 7.x
They may have backported that to 6.13 - that’s my best guess. Check in the admin panel. Lucky you. Extra free users.
Either way nothing has broken, they are not particularly spying on you (yup you agreed to send various stats by using it), nothing is broken, and you still have an entirely free system to use.
If you use their binaries you accept their terms. That’s business.
If you don’t like that, take the source code, remove the bits you don’t like, and build your own.
So you have a choice.
Don’t shoot the messenger.
Hi,
Thanks for your answers but I wonder if anyone knows what really happened/is happening and why this dialogue appeared: what triggered it concretely?
(AFAIU, I already had 50 seats because, right now, I have 44 active users and it’s been like that for several months.)
Best,
Yann
No idea. I can ask but not sure I’ll get answer.
Does it matter that much? They have ability to push some messages to your server. That’s part of your licence you agreed to.
I can absolutely tell you that the 50 seat Starter ONLY commenced with the release of v7. I can pinpont the exact date and place it was announced if I had time - webinar for the release of v7. Prior to that it was 25.
Were you on CE previously? That’s the only I thing I can think of - if you used CE with 44 users you might get put on to Starter automagically. Bonus for you.
Note you can now change to and from CE in your cloud panel.
If you aren’t happy, downgrade. Or build from source.
Hi,
Yes, it matters because what changed (if anything) is still unclear. Would you mind asking around, it could also be a bug
Best,
Yann
Had it on some of mine too.
Nothing ‘changed’. They have the ability to push messages. Have for a LONG time. They just don’t often do it.
That’s it. It may happen again. It’s not a bug. You signed up for it by accepting their terms of use.
If you don’t like it, fork, remove the code and build from source.
It really is that simple.
Note if you had 44 users you were either on a paid plan, eg Pro/EE, or CE. You would not have had 50 seats otherwise. So there is something you haven’t told us.
I imagine they’ve automatically “upgraded” any CE instances on <50 users to Starter. That’s to your benefit.
Aa mentioned before, you can downgrade to CE in the workspace panel. Or fork etc.
As you have given little history it’s hard to tell any more.
Hi,
How could I know if I (ever) was in CE (I sure was not Pro/EE) when the info. in the Workspace and Subscription pages say “Starter”. This is exactly the problem and the source of my concern: I just don’t know if something changed when that dialogue popped up.
But now you claim that I’m hiding or lying? Better end the conversation now, it’s been unconstructive anyway.
Yann
Check your cloud panel, and Rocket admin panel.
Either way, you couldn’t be on Starter with 44 users.
The prior limit when orlginally introduced was Starter free for 25 users.
This was upgraded in 7 to 50 users.
I presume they have backported that for < 7 but don’t have an example to confirm.
Nope. I said exactly this.
I did not say you were either hiding info or lying. Please stop reading something that isn’t there and making false accusations at me.
I don’t run your server. You do, so must know the history of it. Users, versions etc.
Fine. Saves me my personal time going in circles - I don’t work here.
I don’t know all your history since these plans were introduced so I can’t say more.
There is no bug and I have provided you with solutions if you don’t want notifications, though they are presumabaly not the ones you want.
