Subject: Feature Idea + Potential Contribution: Shared Notes per Channel
Hi Rocket.Chat Team,
I’d like to share a feature proposal and explore whether there’s interest in building it — either as a community contribution or an official addition.
Proposal: Shared Notes per Channel
The idea is a persistent, collaboratively editable Notes tab inside each channel — a place for teams to document meeting outcomes, decisions, and action items without switching to an external tool.
Problem it solves
Key information from meetings currently ends up scattered: buried in chat history, split across threads, or living in tools like Notion or Google Docs. A lightweight native alternative would reduce context-switching and keep institutional knowledge where the conversation already happens.
Feature scope
- Notes tab per channel (not per user)
- Collaborative editing for channel members
- Auto-save, always accessible
- Optional: post-video-call prompt to create notes
This is intentionally minimal — not a replacement for full document tools, just a functional notepad tied to the channel.
Implementation path
I imagine this could work as either a core feature or a Rocket.Chat App. I’m open to contributing if the team sees value in this direction and can point me toward the right approach.
Some questions:
- Is there prior art or an open issue tracking something similar?
- Would this be considered for core, or is the App framework the preferred path for this type of feature?
- Are there technical constraints I should be aware of (e.g., around collaborative editing)?
